Guitar Hero. Y'all heard of this one? I'm sure you have, it's only the coolest PS2 game EVER. For real, you get to play these rockin plastic guitars and show up on the screen as a virtual rocker in a virtual band. You hit little fret buttons, and strum a plastic strummy thing, so you really feel like you are playing. (um, ok, especially if you are a non-guitar player like me). By the way... in case anyone was wondering... I am the ONLY non-guitar player in the entire Nashville metropolitan area. I've checked. I am really working on beefing up my Guitar Hero skills, since it's music city and all, and I can currently make it all the way through 2 songs.

it's been a while since kiki and I checked out some live music in this town which is a big faux pas on us...this town is crawling with ridiculously good musicians. actually, i take that back...we caught Toots and the Maytals 2 weeks ago but he doesn't count cuz he's from Jamaica (seen?). i'm talking about a show where some local white kid who thinks he's the next Johnny Cash is playing his heart out for pennies in a venue that sells jack daniels by the handle by an old school Hell's Angel member who is also the bouncer and running the board for the night. we made up for our dry spell of live music last nite...

thankfully, Dean and Britta (from Luna) included Nashville on their tour supporting their new album "Back Numbers". anxious to hear what they've been working on since the split, i called them up to see if my adidas hook ups a few years back would get me some guestlist spots. they remembered me and took care of your boy greg and kiki (thanks Pete!). dean is a huge adidas fan and he was rocking some superstar skate slip ons. thanks for supporting the brand, dean! show was great...many of the their new tracks has Britta on lead which is great. throw in some Luna favorites (Bonnie and Clyde, Tiger Lily) and you have a rockin' set. peep Britta belting it:

Tung is the best date, ever. He got me all dressed up and took me out for the sappiest of all the blatantly engineered hallmark holidays.

I was told to get ready to eat some cow so I figured he was ready for a steak bender of some sort. I know what you're thinking, Petite Filet? Prime Rib? T-bone? No, No, and No. He had something much more special in mind, and it was all about the flavor crystals. Off we went, a 40 minute drive to East Jebus, Tennessee and landed... at our not so local... WHITE CASTLE!!!!!

The place was candlelit- Ok, so they were battery powered, but it's much safer that way- and as you can see decorated to the hilt with pink and red plastic stuff. There were red tablecloths and balloons, and a special menu with table service. Note the shot of the special "sampler platter" -it was 99 cents-(oh you know you like the chicken ring)
Several sliders later we crawled back to the car with tremendous stomach aches and I knew without a doubt that this was the guy for me.

one thing I don't get is hockey in the south. when does hockey ever come up when talking about the south? sure, you think of BBQ, country music, the Dukes of Hazzard and the KKK...but hockey?! shit just seems off somehow. guess nashville has this problem figured out somehow cuz the Nashville Predators are in 1st place (and they just picked up Peter Forsberg). here are some pics of me getting into fights with the Predator's ghey mascot Nash and one of the Knights Templar of Nashville, Sir Gheyashell. Located in the basement of Vanderbilt's student center, WRVU has been holding it strong for over 50 yrs broadcasting student run, public radio. our good friend Karuna (a.k.a. Karen Casey) invited otto (ops!) and I to play some records this past week to celebrate mr. Speaking of acid, I had Thanksgiving dinner with some locals out in Franklin, Tennessee. One of the featured entrees was a congealed salad made with black cherries, jello, and Coca Cola. It looked weird, and tasted weirder, but I must admit I liked it. I love that Coca Cola is a cooking ingredient. And who would have known the congealed salad is an entire category of food in the south? Also we had a giblet gravy with sliced up boiled eggs in the thing, in case there was any doubt as to proper caloric and fat content in your dinner. I am bulking up nicely for the winter, thank you very much.

Greg and I have a new friend. No... It's not a chipmunk. It's a very small but very thick Yorkshire Terrier. Granted he's not the toughest looking thing but don't let that sweet face fool you. He is bulking up nicely and is currently being trained in Kung Fu.

Today his name is Chopper. He is a Virgo. His interests include eating, pooing, napping, and hanging out in Tung's pocket. As you can see from the photo, he also likes Tecate.

fall has finally arrived down here in the south. it's a whole different world...the leaves are all changing...the air smells different...getting colder. you can still smell the BBQ which is nice. fall in the south means football...SEC football. for you sports fans out there, your life ain't complete until you check out a game in knoxville @ neyland stadium. 110,000 rednecks all decked out in orange ready to kick the shit out of anyone wearing the visiting team's colors. Kiki and I checked out the Tennessee vs. Alabama game this past saturday. it was nuts. so nuts that G-O-D had to get involved. god bless fall in the south and football!!!

We are settling into the new digs. Thought you might enjoy this shot of Tung with his cool new spreadin' stuff machine. Here he is spraying powdered lime all over the place, including his kicks. Wake up Music City! You don't want to miss this!

Nashville's own "Da Tree a Dem" left to right: "Dirty" Daewee Yen, Alexander "Danger" Dumas, and Ricky.

These guys are the hottest sensation to rock music city since The New Kids on the Block blew us away back in 1989. Here's a shot of the band taking a breather before the final round of the Dickenson County Karaoke Competition Saturday evening. Althought they have been known to rock out alongside the hardest of the hardcore, the group's influences include pre-revolutionary Western Chinese folk music, obscure Iranian love ballads, and tribal drumming. They are expected to sell out the Grand Ol' Opry next year, so plan on reserving seats early! Tickets go on sale next week.

When I found out I was moving to Nashville, one of the first questions I had was if good/authentic asian cuisine existed in the South. Honestly, all the $5.95 all you can eat chinese buffets around town were making your asian hommie worried. Thank god I found Basil while in Brentwood yesterday. Majority of their dishes are Thai...you can also find some Chinese influenced dishes on the menu. I recommend the stuffed chicken wings, Basil's special house noodles (lad nar) and the Red Snapper (depending on availability). Ask for Mai (owner) and she'll take good care of you. Definitely worth the trip to Brentwood...big ups, Mai!

Kiki and I are constantly on the hunt for good restaurants in Nashville. Last night we came across the Park Cafe which, according to the locals, serves the meanest mac n cheese in town. We decided to check out the scene and vibe and were pleasantly greeted by Lisa, the general manager. Lisa was kind enought to give us a tour of the restaurant. She shuffled us between the restaurant's many seperate but intimate rooms and as my eyes were concentrating on the patrons' dishes, I noticed a very interesting looking woman w/blonde hair enjoying some mac n cheese. It was Dolly. I don't know if I'm going out on a gay limb here but if you can't get down with Dolly, you ain't down! I played it cool as I walked past her but man was I tempted to hit her up for a picture and some passes to her playground.

After a month of looking for a place to live I think Kiki and I have found our neighborhood: East Nashville. East Nashville has a really funky vibe, similar to Berkeley...lots of musicians and artists. Last Saturday the neighboorhood hosted the "East Nashville Tomato Art Fest"..music, art, and lots of tomatos.

btw - I ended up buying a new car. Anxious to see what it can do on the freeways, I opened it up not knowing I was in a 55MPH zone. I think I was doing 78. Sgt. Buford T. Justice radar'd my ass and before I could say "cheese grits", I was pulled over:

It must have been my lucky day cuz Sarge let me go with a warning. As Kiki puts it, I "Eddie Haskell'd" my way out of a ticket. To be honest, I totally felt that if I explained to the cop that I was new to town and that everywhere in California the speed limit is usually 70mph, he would be cool and let me go. It worked ("these are not the droids you are looking for"). Thanks Sgt. Buford T. Justice, I owe you a beer.

So after some drama with the law Kiki and I found ourselves in East Nashville trying to figure out where the festival was being held. While we were walking around town we stumbled upon a pretty sweet cafe called the Radio Cafe on Woodland St. that had a sign outside that said that they were serving up fried green tomato BLTs. Being the huge lettuce fans that we are, we had to try one. Here's a pic of the BLT. Sorry it doesn't have smell-o-vision...it was mighty tasty:

After a tasty snack, we headed up to the festival. They had a stage with bands playing all day. Here is the latest "She's Got a Ticket to Ride" video from Beatinpath, one of the bands that performed at the festival. The choreography is amazing:

I am learning all kinds of new things here in the south. The other day I learned you can vacuum astroturf. See how much better the porch looks? I planted some plastic plants out there too.

Tung took me to the Opryland Mall the other night to celebrate my mad hausfrau skills. Highlights included this sick blacklight minature golf course with scary pirate chest. They were blasting ACDC in there.

So the one thing we realized about Nashville is that it has zero public transportation. Sure the city provides the obligatory bus system that takes 1 hr. to travel 5 miles. But try riding that for a week in 100 degree heat and that option becomes really tired really quick. So the search for a new car has begun. We thought it would be fun to time how long it took a salesman to greet us once we parked the car:

1. Carter Church (Lexus of Brentwood) - 34 sec. Carter was very eager salesperson...we found out that this was his 4th day on the job and you could sense he needed a sale under his belt to buy himself some more time w/the dealership. We gave him an A for his enthusiasm, but a C- on his knowledge of the car. Better start studying up, Carter.

2. Charlie (Infiniti of Nashville) - 24 sec. Charlie was like a shark that smells fresh chum. He had his sites on us as soon as we pulled up to the lot. He looked like he was still in high school but that's cool cuz Chop from Towbin Dodge in Vegas got his start in the biz at age 14 and look at where he is now. We gave him an A for his knowledge and B for his enthusiasm.

3. Mike (Music City Motorsports) - 27 sec. Mike was cool and casual and probably the best salesman we came across because he had me seriously looking @ a BMW 5 series when I originally came in to check out an A4. Damn you, Mike. A for being so cool, A for knowledge.

On a completely different topic - we're on our way up to Northern California for Reggae on the River. We'll keep you updated...raise up dem bowls and chalices and be ever faithful to Jah!

Day 1 and 2: Welcome to Nashville

Day 1 in Nashville: After a 7 hr flight with a 3 hr delay @ Denver, we finally landed in Nashville @ 2am. Sweet. Thank god Sevi our wheelchair expert from Ethiopia was patiently waiting for me @ the gate cuz Mr. Eggplant (I injured my foot during the move) can't walk so good. Finally found our home for the next month.

You gotta love corporate housing - you sign up to live in a apt. for a month not knowing a thing about it. The only things we knew about it was it was a 2 bdrm, has DSL and there's a pool somewhere on the property. Thank jeebus cuz it's seriously hot as shit down here. We're used to 65 and foggy not 90 degrees w/90 percent humidity. Ok, back to the apt...I think our apt. was built many years ago cuz it smells old as hell. Here is a shot of Kiki at the front door. Note the astroturf porch leading up to the apt. Can't wait to host my first hog roast..hope astroturf is flame retardant:

Day 2 in Nashville: Here is what Kiki and I have learned so far about the South:

1. Things move way slower down here
2. God is King
3. Macaroni and Cheese is a vegetable

BTW, you may be wondering what Meat and 3 is. It fucking rules is what it is. It's your choice of BBQ meat (pulled pork, ribs, BBQ chicken, sausage, etc) and 3 sides (greens, corn, cole slaw, mac n cheese and many more). It's everywhere in Nashville. In fact, we're convinced the whole town smells like BBQ. And thats a good thing. Did I mention that Mac n Cheese is a vegetable down here? Thank you God!!!
